Methyl-tert-butyl ether/MTBE is a flammable, non auto-oxidizable, clear, colourless liquid of low viscosity with a characteristic terpene-like odour. It is miscible with organic solvents in all ratios, partly miscible with water. MTBE is chemically stable in alkaline medium as well as in the presence of weak acids, air and oxygen.
